Property viewings - staying safe during COVID

Whilst in the midst of a global pandemic, it is important to ensure that we all feel safe as we conduct viewings.

By Raman Sandhu

Recent government guidelines have stated that the housing market can still operate; we just all need to be more vigilant in how we move about and communicate.

It is advisable that as well as washing our hands regularly, we use hand sanitiser, remain two metres apart and wear face coverings whilst in public.

Our safety measures

Birdhouse Surrey will offer sanitiser, face masks and gloves for all prospective tenants or buyers who are viewing a property.

Appointments are scheduled in timely intervals with adequate time between viewings so that door handles and surfaces can be cleaned. There will be no client to client interaction. Sellers and landlords will be asked to vacate the property before viewings are scheduled to minimise any mixing of household bubbles.

Birdhouse Surrey pledges to be as flexible as possible whilst providing as much information as possible. Detailed particulars will be created for each property that is sold or let with us and virtual video tours will be filmed in each property so that prospective buyers and tenants can review potential properties with as much information as possible.

As always, Laura, Abigail and Raman are at the other end of an email or phone call to talk through any questions you may have.

It is important that above all, our health and safety is paramount during these difficult times. Frustrations and delays can arise if one or both parties falls ill with COVID. As such, it may become necessary to pause any moves until it is safe to do so.

Our COVID checklist:

  • We need to check if any of your party is showing symptoms or been asked to self-isolate before we go ahead with any viewings. If you have returned from any country and need to quarantine, then any viewings will progress virtually until it is safe to be in contact.
  • We will wear face coverings while in close face-to-face contact with visitors and where other protective measures are unlikely to be in place, such as in clients’ homes during a viewing.
  • Birdhouse Surrey will ensure virtual tours are available on our website for potential tenants and buyers to see first and then make an appointment to view the property after.
  • If we do not accompany a visit between buyer and seller, guidance will be issued so both parties so they understand how the viewing should be conducted safely.
  • Clients will have to find independent means of travel to a prospective property.
  • All parties viewing a property should use hand sanitiser (or wash their hands with soap and water if not available) immediately after entering the properties. All  internal doors should remain open and all surfaces wiped down before they enter. Separate towels or paper towels should be used if possible and washed or disposed of safely after use.
  • Birdhouse Surrey will do what we can to promote flexibility when arranging move dates, for example advising clients to ensure contracts have explicit terms to manage the timing risks presented by coronavirus.
  • Birdhouse Surrey will work with our clients and other agents to broker a new date to move where sales are due to complete and one of the parties falls ill with coronavirus or has to self-isolate.
  • We will ensure that any keys are appropriately cleaned before handover.
